Thanks. I wanted to convey the sophistication and style of current graphic novels, as well as the comics and artists of the past that the author believes influenced the more unabashedly adult-themed stuff we see today.
I thought that referencing a sort of splash page mega-typography title treatment would land it squarely in the world of comics, without elevating any one artist or specific work over another.
That being said, it's definitely influenced by Chris Ware, a visual reference that (thanks to his über-popular work) allowed me to avoid putting a bunch of conflicting art on the cover...a sort of Sunday-funnies treatment that was originally suggested by the sales & marketing types.
