I really enjoyed working on the interior design for M. Thomas Cooper's upcoming novel 42. The cover design by Rachel S. Tobie (seen at the right) definitely influenced by design in its stark grayscales and its vertical perspective.
42 is the suspenseful story of a man's descent into paranoia as his wife and daughter are missing and he is increasingly aware of the manipulative presence of the number 42 in his life. One of my goals since the beginning of this project was to bring the reader into the paranoia of the main character. As he gets more and more off his rocker, I wanted to reader to feel that, to relate to and understand it. As such I have many design features such as censoring out the name of one of the characters, verticle lines that increasingly box the reader in, binary page numbers, and clues such as 42 lines of text per page. While this book was definitely a challenge to design, I am really happy the way it came out and I am really looking forward to seeing it in print in the next couple of weeks.
