The Novel is about a woman who's a mathematician, specifically in the field of topology.
The shape is from topology--but distorted--b/c she's trying to find her way home throughout the novel, and it isn't as easy as it seems.
Home is in South Korea, where there are a lot of cherry trees. hence the cherry blossom tree!
