A character I'm developing who is going to part of a short graphic novel.
Name: Secho
Gender: male
Race: Prehistoric “Terror Bird” Creature
Height: 10ft / 3m tall (not including feathers)
Job Title: Anti-Stork. ("Prehistorkic" bird... that was horrible. Someone hurt me.)
Job Description: Secho delivers undead babies to temporary foster homes in the infinite realm of Black Shuck (until their birth parents die and can come to reclaim them).
Secho is a delivery bird. However, instead of delivering packages, letters, and other such mundane cargo, he delivers something much more precious and special. Secho delivers babies – dead babies.
When a person dies, regardless of their age, they end up in the infinite realm known as “Black Shuck.” Black Shuck is an all inclusive realm. It is neither heaven, nor hell, but rather a happy mixture of the two. There is no such thing as time. Every day repeats itself. The weather is always the same – changing only when you enter a new area, and of course, newcomers are always appearing.
Secho can not remember a time when he wasn't delivering something. Before he was promoted to delivering babies, he was delivering letter mail. Before he was delivering mail, he'd been delivering pizza. Before pizza there was the newspapers. Was there ever a time before the newspapers? He didn't think so.
This bird is good at his job. Exceptional even. You wouldn't find a better delivery bird if you searched the entire infinite land of Black Shuck, so don't even entertain the idea.
So why does Secho deliver babies? Well, when a baby or toddler dies young, more often than not their parents are still in the living realm. Even though no time passes in Black Shuck, there is still a delay between the arrival of a baby and the arrival of its parents. So it's necessary to set up youngsters with ancient relatives of their to act as temporary foster parents until their birth parents join them. That's where Secho comes in. He transports newly arrived babies to foster homes. A worthy job if there ever was one.
Secho specializes in delivering babies that have died between five weeks to seven months of age. Anything younger than that is much more work as they require a lot of attention, and anything older is just a pain in the feathered behind.
