Description:

Chuck Close: Face Book
Chuck Close is one of the most acclaimed, and recognizable, visual artists in America. His larger-than-life portraits can be found on the walls of museums and galleries throughout the world. Chuck Close Face Book, a children's book for ages 8 and up, presents the artist's life, his art, and many of his artistic processes. After studying Close's work, a group of fifth-grade students visited his studio. The children's marvelously honest and insightful questions, and Close's engaging responses to them, form the book's narrative. In the center is an "exquisite corpse"—an interactive element which shows many different processes used in his self-portraits. Flipping through them, one can create interesting juxtapositions—a scribbled etching of his forehead, lined up with a color Polaroid of his eyes and nose, next to a prismatic grid painting of his chin. Yet, because he uses many of the same photographs as maquettes for his work, Close's face always remains legible. Glue + Paper Workshop, in collaboration with art educator and writer, Ascha Drake, conceived, designed, and produced this unique children's title to be published in Spring 2012.
