My thesis exhibition entitled "Hairbraids!?" premiered at the University of Florida's Focus Gallery this May. It completes my studies and requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Digital Media Art. Thesis committee included chair Max Becher, Dr. Jack Stenner from the University of Florida and Dr. Filiberto Penados (Galen University, Belize).
Hairbraids!? consists of six small projections that showcase video
portraits of female tourists who purchased souvenir hair braids from local
vendors while on vacation in the Caribbean. Combined with the advertising
language used by hair braiders, quotes from interviews with tourists with their
hair braided, and Caribbean beach imagery, these portraits explore issues of
tourist identity through the vernacular associated with the performance of
souvenir hair braiding.
