Alex Knowlton at Winterhouse Design presented this and a few other images to the people at Poetry magazine. This is one of a long series of linked illustrations following a road. Actually, it's the first one I did. I grew up in suburbia, so it was fun to depict it. When I was working on it, it did begin to feel like a poem or a piece of music, with symmetries and tones and conventions assembled to a format.
