Description:

El Designo performed some high flying moves for The National Ice Theatre of Canada in order to promote “Poetry In Motion” – the largest Fringe show on ice since 1998.

We chose to represent the main character of the play – a poet – as the main graphic in our promotional materials. We visually represented this character as a figure completely built out of fonts. The clean vector graphics contrasted with the chaotic mix of letterforms that made up the structure of the poet, and mimicked the internal conflicts he faced in the play. A black, white and red colour scheme maximized the visual impact across all advertising media. This was of great importance to the campaign, ensuring the Poetry In Motion posters would not be lost in a sea of other posters plastered on the Fringe site.

We produced the following materials for this event: newspaper ads, posters, banners, playbills, postcards, t-shirts, blankets, programs, and set design.

Synopsis of the play:

Late one evening, a lonely poet enters a local café to escape a summer storm. Closing his umbrella and shaking the rain from his coat, he removes a precious writing journal from where he had been protecting it from the downpour. Encouraged by a powerful Muse, the isolated poet begins to write, weaving magical stories about the people in the café. Over the course of the evening, the poet begins to find power and solace in his stories, becoming a master of insight and, ultimately, the author of his own life.
