Description:
The story of '90s influential indie band Pavement. Painting by Steve Keene showing the different incarnations of the band (one of dozens he submitted for this cover).
This was a great project due to the publisher giving me complete freedom which is very rare in the industry. The goal was to mimic Pavement's lo-fi CD packages and flyers which were designed by their guitarist, Scott Kannberg (Spiral Stairs), since his dad had a set of Rapidograph pens and other drafting tools. In addition to the 100 or so photographs, xeroxes, and artifacts supplied by the author and the band there are more than 200 pieces of my hand-written scrawls and doodles inside as well as dozens of scans of newspaper halftones to provide the background texture. Thanks to Mark Ohe at Matador Records for providing me with artwork from every single Pavement project released by the label. The entire package was completed in about 30 days from the initial meeting with the publisher to the delivery of cover and interior mechanicals.
