Description:

The iPod has had a significant impact on the digital media market with Apple taking the lion’s share of the MP3 player market. I was asked to visualise a conceptual design for their new range of iPods and create lifelike 3D models.

A large sized display combined with small form factor is the Holy Grail for mobile devices. This can only be achieved with flexible screen technology.

"…the only way to add the key advantage of size – allowing larger displays in smaller, pocket-size mobile devizes – is by actually making the displays rollable” Karl McGoldrick, Phillips

It is truely amazing. I have often thought of this also, how to get a larger screen with such tiny ipods. If i see this in the future, i will know you ran with my idea. ;) What if the ipod itself had a projection eye that projected the image onto...whatever. Either the seat in front of you...etc. Or came with a sort of roll-out screen that could be placed in front of the ipod and could then be contracted and stored, as a rolled up pen in a small slot in the pod... It's definately a difficult solution and i'm curious to see what the actual solutions becomes.

Thanks for the comments Steven - The roll out screen concept does exist in the form of Philip's Readius prototype device. It's pretty ropey (4 shades of grey screen) but given time I think we could well see this kind of device. I like the idea of a mini projector device type thing. :)
