“Nothing dates as fast as the future. Predictions are notoriously difficult. Yet a few trends are emerging which may begin to indicate a set of possible futures for cinema architecture. The most interesting of these is the return of the city-centre cinema.” E Heathcote

Project Brief: To design a centre that focuses on independent cinema; making it more accessible to the general public and acting as a catalyst for regeneration of the area and promotions of the arts in Leeds. To provide a home for Leeds International Film Festival and Leeds-based film and media company Left Eye Blind, whilst incorporating complimentary services. Ultimately, to celebrate the diverse and complex subject of film and bring back the ‘magic of the cinema’.

The three images above show Leeds’ former Third White Cloth Hall, the building chosen to house the Centre. This Grade II listed building dates from the 18th century and reflect the significant period of prosperity the city experienced. It is situated within the Exchange Quarter, an area dubbed ‘the cultural centre of Leeds’, and adjacent to the Calls, home to Leeds’ ever-growing media based community, thus making it an ideal setting for a Film and Visual Arts Centre; Leeds future in ‘cinema architecture’.
