Description:
The assignment was to select three words and use type to express the word. A quotation expressing the word without including the word was also to be included.
I chose the words "joy", "surprise", and "sorrow". Joy and sorrow are closely related and often only separated by a surprise.
I wanted "joy" to reflect the vines and leaves of the roses mentioned in the accompanying quote. To accomplish this, I actually pieced together the "J" from various letters and puntuation.
For "surprise", I chose the font Cyberia, which often surprises the reader when they suddenly seem to comprehend what appears to be Cyrilic text.
In "sorrow", I replaced the first "o" with an ornament of a pierced heart, reflecting the pain of sorrow. The rest of the type reflects the wistful feeling which often accompanies sorrow.
