The Basic Books Group is seeking a motivated and creative individual with book design experience who possesses strong skills in design, layout, typography and time-management for the position of Designer. This position encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including:
• Working under the direction of the Art Director • Assisting Art Director in departmental duties • Administrative work • Managing all aspects and stages of a book’s jacket design and production • Mechanical and promotional materials layout • Assisting with and designing covers • Receiving proofs • Acting as a mentor to other designers within the Design department
Requirements: • BFA or BA in Graphic Design • 1-3 years of relevant work experience in a creative group • Expert proficiency in InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator – Mac based. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Superior organizational skills and a keen eye for details • Photographic eye and a creative, outside-the-box approach to choosing photos • Ability to provide creative solutions to design challenges • Ability to manage multiple projects, work quickly without sacrificing quality in a deadline-driven environment • Adapting to changing schedules, and working under tight time constraints • Knowledge of pre-press processes and print production • A strong portfolio that shows great potential • Sophisticated sense of typography with an attention to detail • Experience with Quark helpful • Staying on top of industry trends and sharing them with the team
