How does fear look like? How does a monster? How is a monster defined: by his deformity or his actions?
A view on the evolution of movie poster design by looking at the horror genre, from 1922 to present day. A introduction to horror and how movie posters where designed to intrigue, scare, and fascinate its audiences.
The horror genre has always fascinated the audience. By taping into the dark spectrum where fear, fantasy and science fiction overlap to bring to life our worst nightmares. A world defined by serial killers, ghosts, cannibalism, vampires, werewolves, ancient curses, satanism, demons, vicious animals. But how to advertise this kind of genre to the audience? This is a look at how horror was presented in graphic design thrum movie posters. Here where fear and the specific elements come to life to tell a story of the grotesque.
It is interesting to see how fear evolved visually, from the colors and typography used, to how they would display the elements specific to a horror movie(from a direct display of a dead body or monster, to a more sublime display as the audience gotten familiarized with the fear promoter – what a vampire does, a serial killer, a ghost).
