Ever since I stumbled upon his name (and this piece) in one of Steven Heller's books, he's become a great source of inspiration.

Integrating type & image, thats what its all about. You should dig up a book about Herb Lubalin or the art director, Fred Woodward. Here is a previous DR post about Lubalin.
