It is the subject matter of Toulouse-Lautrec that I find most important — not elite and refined, but common and crude. He is inspired by the street not the salon. Sort of like a 19th-Century version of gigposters.com.
Toulouse-Lautrec was one of many French poster artists using the new technique of lithography.
