Apple Computer

I had my eye on the Apple Lisa selling for about $10,000 and then along came the Macintosh in 1984. I remember the superbowl adverstisement.

Here is the inspiring Stanford commencement speech (15 mins) where Jobs talks about typography, business innovation, and life. And here is Steve in the 1990s being a bit nasty about his competition, Microsoft. Ouch. In the clip he points out a truth about technology: that *culture* must be part of it. You can also read some more of his views at the Smithsonian website.

I guess today its all about the second-generation of Apple. Jonathan Ive and the iPod and such. Read more about the early days at Apple.

I was lucky enough to be in London when this exhibit was going on back in 2003. It was interesting to see quicksilver macs, imacs, and the like behind security glass.

I personally thought that the isub was fantastic.

There are few products which are such a personal, direct expression of an individual. But for me Apple = Steve Jobs. Even if Ives currently is the form-giver to the box, Steve remains the guru-prince who is the mastermind of the entire user experience and culture. I met him once (when he was running NeXT) and Jobs was indeed charismatic and well-schooled in design itself.

Oh, but I should add that Jobs is not a guru alone on the mountain. He has had his enablers like Woz and programmers like Bill Atkinson whom I mentioned earlier. In the same way that McLuhan brought together the ideas of others into one bright point, so does Jobs.
