Comic Sans
July 26, 2007

Sometimes it is best just to apologize. So Vincent Connare, designer of the widely distained typeface Comic Sans, did just that. His defense is that it was never a true typeface, initially intended for only one single specific use. And yet it has become a popular choice of the uncultured public.

Other novelty faces, like Cooper Black and Hobo, have suffered similar ridicule by refined typographers. And even such hot-fonts such as Helvetica have detractors: Weingart said, if someone is using Helvetica he doesn’t know anything about typography (in an interview with Frutiger).

What are your top five type preferences? Here is a list of what other designers have chosen.
