Retro Tourism, Architecture and Signage. Author Wayne Curtis has a good commentary and slideshow posted by The Atlantic Unbound.

One excellent insight is that, in these motels, the architecture itself becomes advertisement. That echoes the ideas of Venturi and Brown in the classic book, Learning from Las Vegas.

on August 12, 2007 “ah, that video was wonderful (and wonderfully depressing). that too was my childhood... from week long family vacations to a quick weekend, the family would jump in my dad's enormous station wagon and head over to some new beach (from orlando, a quick drive)... we would then find a cheap motel with a pool and kitchenette.
