Type designer Matthew Carter has a long record of experience in type design. From metal type-cutting to photo-typography to the digital, his endurance is inspirational.

You might know his typefaces Verdana and Georgia comissioned by Microsoft. He currently works under the nameplate of Carter & Cone. Another example of his type design is the signature face for Yale University.

A good book about Carter is by Peggy Re.

people seem to mis- and overuse his faces in ways that make me uneasy. bell in sizes bigger than a phonebook, for example. and georgia and verdana in print always makes me want to rip my hair out.

that said, do you know anyone who has gotten their hands on the 'yale' typeface? since its so secret society and only available to university cohorts on the network?

seems like a ton of exclusivity for a font thats just a souped up bembo.

i still want it to mis- and overuse as i please.

you bring up an interesting issue about "copyright" of type designs. I found a recent debate on boingboing.

look like yale has terms and conditions in an attempt to reduce the chances that their commissoned face will get loose in the wild.
