Retro: Do you remember the first time you surfed the web?
In the early 1990s I'd already been using the Internet for several years — sending email, dialing-up the local BBS, managing listservs. Typically geeky stuff like that. I had just started to work with a nifty protocol called Gopher that let you link together text files to create online hypertext. It was the same sort of non-linear interactivity I had been accustomed to in HyperCard but was accessible globally via the net.
And then along came the first web browser: NCSA Mosaic, made by some student techies. Soon Mosaic would have a bigger brother Netscape Navigator. The browser, by controlling page layout through HTML and displaying digital images, made possible an exciting new medium for design.
