Manhole Covers
| March 07, 2007

What is it about these covers that I find so intriguing? It is something about their mundane industrial quality. They are like giant coins found on the street.

The photo above is by m-louis from a large collection on flickr. Another great resource is this site. There is even a dedicated site called Drainspotting, haha. Some of the best seem to be in Japan, from simple to highly illustrated.

ive seen this collection before and it is really great. makes the prospect of a heated manhole cover skin branding sound extra appealing to me.

Wow, what a stunning story, Chrissie. Right down the street in Williamsburg, too. Thanks for the post. I'm also intrigued by the turn-of-the-century NYC subway typography signage/tilework. Interesting materials — ceramics or steel.

i love forgotten ny and subway tile and type. especially the really arcane and ornate stuff that reminds you of forgotten craft and that the city has so many layers of history. oh but thats a whole other story.
