Today we have easy access to an enormous variety of inexpensive (sometimes) and ready-made typography to use—some so lovely, some not so much. This wasn't really so when I was back in college in the 80s/90s. Newbee-designer poverty required creative use of the classics—Bodoni, Garamond, Baskerville, Helvetica, Century. Louise Fili's hand drawn type created during her book design career at Pantheon Books from 1978 to 1989 really inspired me as a student and still does. It's a reminder that instant digital fixes so often don't serve a book as well as the care of hand-made type.

Today, Ms. Fili's muse is Italy and she creates logos and packaging related to food. I came accross a 2010 interview of Ms. Fili and she talks about her inspirations and design process.
