An accidental turn down the wrong side street in the East Village led me to a large painted mural based on an original illustration by French artist, Jules Julien.

“...Nestled in the East Village on E. 3rd Street between 2nd Ave. and Bowery, the work, which is almost monochromatic but with a striking contrast of black color has brought a sense of tranquility to this diverse block...Passersby and long time residents commented on its renewal of what was once an unremarkable sight, yet the the best part of painting was hearing how the temporary inhabitants of the center especially experienced joy from the mural...” —Overall

The graphic simplicity and contrast of RÉBUS was highly viewable from a distance, but I walked towards the wall for a closer look at the detailed street art. Then, I noticed the neatly branded signature on the bottom right of the wall reading, “Jules Julien x Overall Murals.” The Jules Julien illustration painted by Overall Murals was the inaugural piece in the Artists Work 2011 series, providing a visual improvement to one previously gray wall in NYC.
