The Australian Design Museum Exhibition + prints
| March 10, 2010

The pop-up Australian Design Museum Exhibition, a fusion of a museum and a shop, was recently on view at the Shapiro Gallery in Sydney, Australia. Curated by Sarah King, the exhibition features 20 Australian designers with designs ranging across disciplines and decades. There is a focus on "iconic prototype and limited edition furniture, objects and prints" from the 20th and 21st centuries. Though the show ended on March 7th, 2010, there are several limited edition posters still for sale (note: prices are in Australian dollars). Included is a personal favorite, a silk-screen recreation of a rare "Peek Frean's Biscuits" poster designed by Donald Fish (original design from 1956). The print-run is a low edition of 10 copies, all signed by Don Fish. I do wish I had the money to splurge on this one.

Donald Fish is Australia’s answer to his own mentor and friend French graphic designer Raymond Savignac. A long an important career in graphic design and advertising, Fish produced over 70 posters during his career. He is credited with having brought the European Advertising Poster to Australia in the early 50s.

Below is "Hopscotch Show & Tell," one of two poster designs for sale by Mark Gowing:

Mark Gowing is the poster king of Australian Graphic Design. He created the identity for our favourite logo; Hopscotch. Mark is currently working on a 40 poster exhibit for the Warsaw International Poster Biennale 2010

Below is the "Solutions" poster designed by David Pidgeon:

David Pidgeon is recognized internationally for his typographic work. The transformation of the cube into type in his Solutions poster is a clever play on form and the self-referencing of the title.

I'm really looking forward to seeing future curatorial projects from Sarah King. For further reading I recommend Home Life's interview with Sarah King about the Australian Design Museum Exhibition.

(thanks to Sarah King for providing above images and caption text for the posters)
