Women of Design: Influence and Inspiration book

Women of Design: Influence and Inspiration book

I've been anxiously awaiting the book Women of Design: Influence and Inspiration from the Original Trailblazers to the New Groundbreakers by UnderConsideration founders Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit. As of December 8th, the book is now available and I'm hoping I'll have a copy in hand soon. In the meantime, UnderConsideration has posted a one-page teaser which is packed with great information and outgoing links for most of the designers featured in the book.

One of the most interesting parts of the book is a fold-out spread with a complex diagram of influence and inspiration

(small detail below).

The book covers three generations of female designers and breaks up the designers into one of three categories: Trailblazers, Pathfinders, and Groundbreakers. Though it's nice to see some of my favorite designers on the list, it's seeing the names of designers I'm not familiar with that excites me most.

The cover illustration is by Marian Bantjes, who is also included in the book as a groundbreaker.

Below are a few sample spreads courtesy of the teaser page. Some additional pages can also be seen via Amazon.

Louise Fili is one of the trailblazers

Irma Boom is one of the groundbreakers.

I think most designers would agree that quality reference material in the area of female design professionals can be sparse. This book is a welcomed addition and hopefully will introduce many to the talents of someone new. I hope the writers of this book will consider a follow-up title highlighting the careers of women designers working in the early-mid part of the 20th century (such as some of the designers who provided influence to those featured in Women of Design).

Do you think there is a glass ceiling for women in the area of graphic design?

This is so exciting! Can't wait to get a copy. As for the question of whether there's a glass ceiling for women in graphic design-- that's tough to answer without framing it within more context, perhaps... my short answer is probably 'yes and no.' Hope to see it addressed in detail within the book though...

My favorite professor in design school was an amazing designer, who also happened to be a woman. I don't know about other areas of design, but many of the huge names floating around in the Book Cover Design world are women. This book looks awesome.

This looks brilliant, and thanks for all the links in reference to women in the field of design. I have started reading The Female Design Establishment on Step Inside Design, really interesting to get other female designers' opinions about different topics including equality of wages etc. - thanks for this great post.

As the son raised of a feminist educator, I'm all on board with this. Power to the women of design! I think I'll ask Santa for it this year. Thanks for sharing.
