Hollow Earth
| February 04, 2008

Here is a cover by Alex Camlin. A cover like this causes me to want to read the book, this (to me) is probably one of the greatest comments that can be assigned to a cover (do you think this true?). I love the illustration, and how the type feels as integrated as it is. The type even has multiple layers to itself.

This book is about the different lands within our own earth. Within the exterior of its cover, the book also has several different black and white illustrations.

We will see if we can get Camlin to comment on his design process for this cover, or even his interest in the topic.

Yes. Awesome. Is the "map of the interior earth" type hand done?

Thanks guys, what an honor!

This was a great book to work on. All of the art on the jacket came from the author and was originally created by a couple of different "hollow earth societies" in the 30s or 40s...true believers, to be sure. The art was originally B&W; I colorized it for the cover. The calligraphy was part of the original map. The title type is Neutraface 1, modified by me. I've added the back cover to my original post, which was created using parts of a flier that advertised the newsletter of the "Koreshan System", an inner-world cult.

As for my personal interest in the subject, I do find it fascinating. I'm told my great-grandmother was a firm believer in the hollow earth. She was convinced that UFOs came from holes at the north and south poles...who knows, maybe I'm one of "them" after all...

I love the full production, and how the content drives the entire work. What a great idea to make the back cover copy the contents of an old advertisement. Seems like the perfect way to execute this cover. Great type on the spine as well.
