It looks like a nice beginning of a collection of Penguin covers from days gone by. If you want the whole scoop on the history of Penguin, I suggest reading Penguin Special by Jeremy Lewis. For a retrospective and commentary on their covers try Penguin by Design by Phil Baines.

Update: For a beefier set, check out Joe Kral's Penguin by Design Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joekral/sets/72157594264351021/

My eight-year old son knocked on the door. "Dad, I want to show you my drawing.
It's like those 1940's or 1950s cartoon characters."

Sure enough. He was right. I does look like a modern advertising icon. I forget what it was like to just draw with complete freedom. Or at least approach projects with complete freedom. But, I was reminded today.

Sam wants to be a designer when he grows up.

(Don't worry. This isn't going to become a regular venue to post refrigerator art. If you want to see that, go to my Flickr link below.)

Turner Duckworth

If I would pick one firm whose work best represents classic contemporary design, Turner Duckworth would be it. Their packaging and logo work is smart, well-done and not beholden to cheap trends that so many designers fall back on. All the while their work is decidedly contemporary.

Some of my favorites: Steel Reserve Lager brand creation Neal's Yard Remedies brand redesign, and all the packaging in the Superdrug product line.

The firm is featured in the latest issue of Communication Arts.
