new licensing deal

new licensing deal
For several months now a deal has been in the works between this artist and a wonderful company called Transformational Threads.

A licensing deal was offered to produce a limited edition series of gorgeous handmade thread paintings based on Peacock Crimson. After negotiations were completed a very high resolution series of images and files winged their way to Vietnam where, for many weeks, highly skilled artisans worked their magic to create faithful reproductions of the peacock in beautiful hand-dyed threads embroidered onto pure white cotton.

Three gorgeous samples then winged their way back across the water and I saw them for the first time this week. Once I gave my hearty approval a contract was signed, and now Transformational Threads is celebrating its first anniversary with the forthcoming edition of colorful, richly detailed, highly textured embroidery "paintings" (also known as thread paintings or needle paintings).

These thread paintings faithfully reproduce my original acrylic painting, and the incredibly
gorgeous embroideries are so luscious that I cannot fully describe my thoughts when I first laid eyes on them. Let's just say that my heart skipped a beat! A large full size sample will be framed to hang in my studio, and orders are now being taken through Transformational Threads' website for these lovely limited edition pieces.

These incredibly unique and beautiful thread paintings will be stunning gifts and keepsakes, and the peacock and I are thrilled to now be represented by Transformational Threads.

Visit my
website for more details, and let me know what you think!

altered states shrine - mixed media

altered states shrine - mixed media
I spent all day in the studio yesterday and the shrine is now complete (save for one detail that I forgot to photograph at the end of the day... some milagros that I added... a heart, eye, and hand...... photos of those later).

I cut the metal and nailed it onto the drawer with tiny brass nails, curled and twisted it just so, and then started to add all the finishing touches... the ladder, a star, statue of liberty dollar coins, and an antique bottle with a key inside and a speckled wooden egg perched on top.

I am so pleased with the shrine and it will hang in the studio with other mixed media pieces. Now on to the Altered States box and I have already snipped lots of fantastic images to decoupage on the outside, and I am collecting some of my favorite treasures to add to the inside of the tea box.

As soon as I get a few minutes I will add all the process photos to the section for the workshop on my artist site.

See lots more process photos here.

an unexpected gift

an unexpected gift
I arrived at the studio yesterday ready to finish tying the ladder that I was making for my personal shrine example for Fall classes... and knowing that the next thing I wanted to accomplish was to cut some metal that I had for a decorative roof to the shrine. A staff member stopped by to discuss the possibility of a mural project, and with her she brought a big sheet of scrap metal that she and another staff member had decided to gift me with. I was delighted with the metal and thought I would tuck it away for some as-yet-unknown sort of project. We talked murals and she was off to do a hundred things, and I got back to my shrine work.

I opened the tube containing the metal (that I had been saving for MONTHS) to cut for the roof.... and as I handled the very supple and malleable metal something was tickling oddly in my brain. There was a project insert in the tube that seemed to suggest children's projects and some craft guides. I bent the metal this way and that like liquid silver and the tickling in my brain increased to insistent alarm bells.

Setting the metal down I more closely inspected the tube and paperwork, and then realized why the malleability of the metal was bothering me so much. Lead warnings were contained all over the paperwork with rather dire warnings about the state of California (always a bad sign when you see the state of California mentioned in warnings...... This product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling........ ) and admonishments to wash your hands thoroughly and immediately after handling the metal, and to not eat or drink in proximity to the metal...... and I had read enough.

Back into the tube went the metal and my work surfaces were washed down and my hands were cleaned and I sat back down to look at my shrine - my great ideas for the roof short-circuited rather unexpectedly..... And then my gaze fell on the metal that I had just been gifted with a half hour before - still sitting on my work table where my friend had left it for me. The universe works in mysterious and wondrous ways and my metal roof was back in business with this new metal sheeting that was coppery on one side and silvery on the other. And while visitors came and went during the course of the day I worked on cutting and placing the metal for my roof.

Updated images coming soon.

lacquer series

lacquer series
I finally got some good studio shots of the lacquer series that I have started, called Units. I needed to get some jpegs to a client and finally got the pictures taken. (Not enough hours in the day.) The paintings can be combined in groupings and I will be working on various sizes for examples and to play with the design. I am also going to experiment with the lacquer coating a bit and a trip to Home Depot might be required.

articles and secrets

articles and secrets
A very nice article about the Unique Visions Resident Artist Show has appeared in the Rockville Central Blog, and as always we at the art center are grateful for their support and the coverage they bring to the wonderful things always happening at VisArts.

In the studio: I am tying that miniature ladder together for the personal shrine demo piece for
Fall classes, and soon I will be using my very sharp tin snips to fashion a very interesting and unusual metal roof that will be nailed to the top of the shrine with tiny brass nails.

Oh, and the peacock has a secret that might be shared very soon...... wait for peacock whisperings any minute now....... or maybe in the next week.
