A Message of Peace, Freedom & Love

A Message of Peace, Freedom & Love
Love how the numeral 2 looks as if it's scratched (look carefully, it’s subtle) on the surface overlaying the copy on Comme des Garcons limited edition CdG#2 "Silver Words" … available for pre-order at Blackbird. "Words contain meanings like a bottle holds a perfume. Both convey messages that can be interpreted and experienced in an immense variety of different ways, each of them communicates an essence, a thought, a shared experience. Messages in bottles have always signified belief and a hope for the future. Using advanced serigraphic techniques, evolved from traditional printing methods, the original Comme des Garcons 2 pebble-shaped bottle has been lacquered in black to contain silver words of peace, freedom and love in several languages. The result is a deep, matt-black colour surface holding an infinate message of hope, stamped in silver words."

Mossy Message

Mossy Message
Being a huge fan of gardening and anything typographical, I was delighted to discover illustrator Anna Garforth's Mossenger project. She has used moss to create type/grafitti that grows on a wall with a verse from Eleanor Stevens. This installation is a part of YCN LIVE in London. I'd love to try this on the cinderblock wall down my driveway, but here in Southern California I'd probably have to do it in Astroturf. Beautiful work, check out her site.

A Closer Look
This image is from the cover of Funki Porcini’s album Fast Asleep. If you look closely you’ll see that the titling is all done in vintage audio gear, what a great concept!

Iconic Headstone

Iconic Headstone
The iconic Paul Rand was one of the most prolific and influential graphic designers of the twentieth century. His treatise Thoughts on Design changed the way we look at pictorial identity. He passed away in 1996 leaving an enormous legacy and body of work. While visiting his site today I saw his headstone and thought how a design could be so befitting for such a great innovator. Rand’s name and life dates chiseled on a cube of marble sits askew on a cube of granite inscribed in Hebrew—it’s perfect and designed by Fred Troller, a pioneering Swiss modernist designer.

It’s sites such as this that keep me distracted from my work, but are so damn inspiring! Steven Hill has complied an impressive online collection of movie title screen shots of over 5,000 titles.

The Iron Curtain

The Iron Curtain
I really respond to artists that explore typography as a medium, beyond the canvas or paper. This amazing curtain of type by Jaume Plensa is titled Silent Rain (2003). Constructed of iron in eight parts: with texts by Baudelaire, Blake, Dante, Estelles, Ginsberg, Goethe, Shakespeare and Williams. All I can say is WOW.

Living in a Miniature World

Living in a Miniature World
I first saw some of these artful photos of little people set in the streets of London awhile back, but failed to bookmark the site. This morning, thanks to Black Eiffel I rediscovered the world of Slinkachu. Slinkachu is the clever young artist/photographer behind these gems, “Little hand painted people, left in London to fend for themselves.”. His upcoming book “Little People in the City-The Street Art of Slinkachu” can be pre-ordered from the UK. There are lots of scenes posted on his blog, so check it out!
