"The exhibition, La Montaña Rusa, consists of a new work of the same name, which alludes to both a roller coaster and a bed, juxtaposed with other new sculptures and a group of drawings. The exhibition investigates Los Carpinteros' interest in objects of domesticity, as exemplified by items such as beds, swimming pools and shelves...."
Google them and try to find the PBS piece on Cuban art. Los Carpinteros get extra love for "reclaiming" most of their early materials from the vacant mansions in Cuba.
Wow, truly one of those powerful moments of art.
Forget embargos, isolation and name calling (axis of evil anyone?), this just goes to show that art is the universal language, the universal love and can really bring people together...and all that stuff dreamers believe in.
Seems like the arts should get some of that sweet defense budget spending?
If you're from outta town, you must check Printed Matter.
They carry zines, prints, guys with beards & and short run art books from all over the world--something like 70% of their inventory is under 25$. They nurture a community of artists and writers with readings, curated shows and I'm not, not promising weird nude art books. It's the most inspiring store in NYC. It will become your Rushmore.
10th Ave bet. 21st and 22nd street.

The 62 are my favorite. Go to their site, and you too will be believers.
"We consider our workspace a laboratory where we tinker, romanticize, cook and converse about notions of self-sufficiency, sustainability, beauty, building communities and the possibilities of using art to make that happen."
They were last years AIGA's fresh dialog.
They were my people and my neighbors in Emergency Arts.
And they continue to blow minds.
