The Zero Dollar Bill: Laura Gilbert
Add to Folder | Comments (5) | October 07, 2008

I just saw a segment on CNN about the artist Laura Gilbert and her creation of the "Zero Dollar," and couldn't pass on posting about this. Laura Gilbert was passing out 10,000 fake "zero" dollars in front of the New York Stock Exchange today (signed limited editions). The art piece is about "the destructive role of many financial institutions, and the decline of U.S. currency to the point of seeming worthlessness." What perfect timing!
Laura Gilbert is a gallery artist specializing in painting and printmaking. She has an upcoming exhibition at The Grady Alexis Gallery in Manhattan, opening  October 24th, which includes "The Zero Dollar" prints. The title of the show is appropriately titled, "Money, Men, and Mischief."  Jon Coffelt is the show's curator. The show will run through Nov. 22, 2008.

Here is the Laura Gilbert/Mad as Ever segment on CNN, with Jeanne Moos:

Edward C. Kozlowski, Designer
Add to Folder | Comments (0) | April 11, 2008

I know very little to nothing about the artist/designer Edward C. Kozlowski. My great uncle left me with a small collection of old design annuals—and I found Kozlowski in the ‘61/‘62 Graphis Annual. Edward C. Kozlowski was the “artist” for the above packaging projects for Cointreau Brandy (in many of the old Graphis annuals, there’s no clear distinction between the word “designer” and “artist”). The studio that is credited for this piece is The Warner Brothers Co. (Bridgeport, Connecticut).

Unfortunately many of the artists, designers and projects featured in these out-of-print books, have scarce information available on them.

Nevertheless, I thought if I saw these same package designs in the store today I would stop for a moment.

I did find tid bits of extra information from some quick internet browsing. Edward C. Kozlowski designed a logo for Warner Packaging. Also in the AIGA Design Archives, Edward C. Kozlowski Design Inc. designed the packaging for the 1979 Coppertone suntan lotion and tanning line.

As always, any comments with more insight/information is appreciated.
