Pixar's Toy Story 3 Teaser Trailer
Add to Folder | Comments (0) | May 30, 2009

Pixar's Toy Story 3 teaser trailer is now posted in HD on the Apple site. The storyline created for the trailer shows the construction of the new Toy Story 3 brand. Having Woody (with an army of toy helpers) compete with Buzz Lightyear for the best logo design is super cute. Of course Buzz shows up Woody with "quality craftsmanship." But I think Woody's design has more heart.

Sequels are often not as good as the original—but I have to say I loved Toy Story 2. Maybe that's because of my love for collecting? Now that the wait for UP is over, we have a new date to look forward to: June 18, 2010.

Typography inspiration found at the TDC Book Fair
Add to Folder | Comments (2) | May 29, 2009

The TDC Book Fair (May 29th—30th, 2009), provides an intimate environment to browse new book titles in the specialized areas of book design, printing, typography, and lettering arts. But the highlight for me was seeing the beautiful antiquarian books, and vintage type specimen booklets. Large bookstores and fairs can sometimes be overwhelming—it was a nice change to have space to turn pages freely (even for the antiquarian fragile books) and have conversations directly with book, lettering and design professionals. Hopefully the Type Directors Club Book Fair will be a new annual tradition in New York City.

I have a tendency of purchasing more books than I have room for, but it's a hard habit to break. Below are a few photographs of what I ended up taking home:

(above is a promo for Mark Batty Publisher)

I found the Yearbook of the Plimpton Press (1911) very unique because it has 9 actual
book covers pasted into the book. (a few more photos on flickr)

The Handy Book of Artistic Printing: A Collection of Letterpress Examples
(published by Princeton Architectural Press) was in my Amazon wish list for months. Doug Clouse and Angela Voulangas (the designers and authors of the gorgeous book) were at the TDC signing copies of their new book, but unfortunately I just missed them.

To support the TDC, I also purchased an old annual from 1987. The pages are filled with designs by Louise Fili, Carin Goldberg, and Charles Spencer Anderson (pre- csadesign).

The TDC table also had a large stack of old type specimen books for ITC. I bought only two—betting that someone will buy up the rest of the pile of 70s style specimens. (in April I attended the Ed Benguiat talk, so this swayed what I picked up)

Stop-motion time lapse animated music video for Death Cab for Cutie's Little Bribes

Death Cab for Cutie - Little Bribes from Ross Ching on Vimeo.

The other day I discovered an impressive stop-motion time lapse music video for Death Cab for Cutie's song Little Bribes.  This is not an official video and was made as a self-promo piece, or just for fun by Ross Ching. I find the incorporated typographic elements very unique and like the use of bokeh technique—and believe this could've passed as a real commissioned piece.

Ross Ching writes more about the process behind the video: "For this video, I pulled out every time lapse, stop motion and live action camera trick that I could think of. It took me about 2 weeks. The goal was to create a fresh, new direction to take my work to..." —Ross Ching

Gonkar Gyatso, artist in 53rd Venice Biennale

In the magazine shop in Grand Central Terminal, the cover of issue 63 of ArtAsiaPacific caught my attention with its visual overload of branding logos, typography, and recognizable cartoon characters. The artwork on the cover is a detail of The Shambala of the Modern Times by Gonkar Gyatso. I like Gyatso's clever integration of pop culture icons and references within the shapes of Buddhist iconography. It wasn't until I delved deeper into the magazine that I realized this juxtaposition. The feature article on the artist entitled Contours of Identity, provides fascinating insight into the cultural, political, and spiritual influences which helped shape the artist's view today.  Born in Lhasa in 1961, he studied traditional Chinese ink-and-brush painting in Bejing. He is the founder of Sweet Tea House, a contemporary Tibetan art gallery. Currently, Gonkar Gyatso lives in London.

"Having lived in Tibet, China, India and the West, Gyatso's art proposes insightful statements on cultural hybridity of globalization as well as the sea change of the world yet to come." —artist bio

Gonkar Gyatso will be a participating artist at the upcoming 53rd International Art Exhibition: Fare Mondi // Making Worlds. The piece shown here will be included with his more recent body of work for the show.

Murakami Self-Portrait and Flower Plate in Casa BRUTUS
Add to Folder | Comments (2) | April 27, 2009

Offering similar suspense as a mystery boxed vinyl toy, the extra thick shrinkwrapped May 2009 issue of Casa BRUTUS caught my eye at Kinokuniya. The new issue of the Japanese lifestyle + design magazine features a unique cross promotion with Japan Brand (producer of the Takashi Murakami designed "Flower" plate included with the magazine). I'm impressed with the durability of the plate, which survived a tumble off the bookshelf.
Though I can't read Japanese, there is a minimal amount of English text sprinkled throughout the Casa BRUTUS issue. Regardless, it isn't necessary to read the magazine to appreciate its design, sophistication of content, and photography.
