A well designed biography on Fidel Castro. I believe this was designed by Henry Sene Yee. Does anyone notice the nice tie between the Cuban dictator and a cigar box? I wonder if this tie was simply because one of the most obvious links between us and Fidel are Cuban cigars? I do like the nice touch of wood on the spine. I also think that it works well to place the endorsement (things we as book designers tend to look down upon) in the black bar on the bottom of the book.
Two different looks at Stravinsky. The design on the left by Henry Sene Yee and the design on the right by Peter Mendelsund.
Stravinsky was a Russian composer, perhaps one of the most influential in the 20th century. I'm hoping I have the right Stravinsky for both these titles (I know of no other). Both titles are very contemplative and have a great underlying message. "Glimpses of life" has a nice subtle visual tie with Stravinsky's glasses sitting before him, and the spine has a great tie-in with music. "A Second Exile" has a nice visual read (him in one chair and absent from another) communicating his exile. I agree with the designers that Stravinsky looks better in gray (not that I've taken the time to see him in color).
If you want to hear some of his work you could listen to his ballet "The Right of Spring". I quote Stravinsky when I state "music is, by its very nature, essentially powerless to express anything at all" I don't know the context, but it seems an interesting quote from a composer.
